Home : Monarchy GuideThis section of Utopianways describes in detail the options available specifically to the King or Queen of a kingdom. Minor variations are due to specific rules for each environment. Monarch Responsibilities and BenefitsIf a province becomes King or Queen (by force or vote), then that province gains several benefits, and – at the same time - additional responsibilities which will take time, dedication, patience, diplomacy, and more. The elected Monarch must rule with a fair hand and seek input from fellow kingdom members. The King or Queen is also responsible for the maintenance of the Kingdom Forums: keeping them clean, and making them useful to the various rulers across the kingdom. A Monarch represents the kingdom to the world, and his or her actions will reflect on the provinces he or she represents. Diplomacy and tact will be vital to any kind of long-term success. The Monarch must maintain relations with other kingdoms, like negotiating ceasefires, peaceful relations, or declaring war. Kings and Queens may start projects such as the nurturing and flight of a Dragon, may display a kingdom banner, and may appoint a Page. A Monarch can also set a message to be displayed kingdom-wide upon login. With Monarchy come benefits as well. Beyond the recognition and respect that such a position entails, the people of the province and the kingdom understand how vital leadership is to the kingdom's future. As such, the peasantry of a Monarch will work one-tenth harder to improve economy, food and rune production, and defense. Starting with hostile relations and beyond, a Monarch also boosts its defensive thievery and magic effectiveness by one-tenth. Message from Our MonarchThis message may be displayed on the screen upon login and before continuing into the game. This message may contain important information, guidelines, and diplomatic actions that a Monarch wishes to communicate to the rest of the kingdom. Keeping this message fresh and not stagnant lets the kingdom know that their elected representative is aware of, and will be resolving, issues, circumstances, events, etc. The Monarch message may be set from the Politics screen, under the Monarch Options. The login message is limited to 200 characters, including spaces. Kingdom NameUpon conferring, or not, with kingdom members, the Monarch may set the name of the kingdom, so it can be known and recognized by the rest of the utopian world. The kingdom name is limited to 20 characters, including spaces, and can be set through the Politics screen, under Monarch Options. Stance DeclarationThe Monarch sets the Stance for the kingdom. Available choices are Normal, Fortified, Aggressive, and Peaceful (refer to the related guide page for more details). Stances do not apply during Wartime. A stance can be changed only after twenty-four hours from its last modification. Generally, the Stance choice reflects the setup of the kingdom and/or the general intention towards other kingdoms. The choice of Stance may be related also to the needs of the kingdom: for example, a Monarch will often choose the Fortified stance following an extended conflict or War to ease the subsequent recovery time. Kingdom Forum ModerationThe Monarch, as any other province in the kingdom, may create new threads and post in the Kingdom Forum. Additionally, the Monarch may delete threads, posts within the threads, and may make threads “sticky”. By making a thread sticky, the thread will be displayed atop all others. Sticky status may be a way to focus the kingdom’s attention on important topics. Generally, the Monarch and/or the Page will keep the Kingdom Forum organized and delete outdated posts. A Kingdom Forum displaying too many threads may be very difficult to read. Page Role and AppointmentThe Monarch may appoint a Page. This role enables the province chosen to delete, add, or otherwise modify the threads in the Kingdom Forum. While the Page has no other powers conferred by the Utopian Lords beyond those of maintaining the Kingdom Forum, often a Page is also the intended vice-monarch, or right-hand of the elected Monarch, authorized by the Monarch and the kingdom to speak in their stead. Kingdom BannerA kingdom banner, or emblem, may be displayed above the kingdom name and location. The Monarch (or a fellow province) may create a graphic (generally in .jpg or .gif format) and place it somewhere on the web (free web server, for example). The Monarch will then type the web address of the graphic above, as well as the width (no more than 500 pixels) and height (no more than 200 pixels) of the same. This will activate the kingdom emblem. Emblems should be created in a positive manner - offensive and inappropriate emblems will result in immediate deletion. Emblems should only be linked if the Monarch or provider of the image has rights to use both the content and the site where it is stored - players violating these rules will be deleted. Vacation Mode CancellationA Monarch may cancel Vacation Mode on any province that has been in vacation mode for at least five utopian months. Such restriction is necessary to prevent abuse of the vacation mode feature. Diplomatic RelationsThe Monarch, as representative of the kingdom, is the only one empowered to make binding diplomatic decisions. Once a kingdom faces hostility from another kingdom, it earns the right to go to war, provided it reaches the Unfriendly stage itself. In the case of a mutual hostility, the kingdom that is not as hostile has the right to escalate the conflict to a level of war through declaration by the Monarch. Declaring WarTo declare War, the monarch will navigate, through the kingdom page, to the kingdom it wishes to engage in war with, and press on the declaration button (available if the above conditions are met). War will then commence within the following twenty-four hours. Withdraw or Mutual PeaceWar can only be halted by either Monarch and only in one of two ways and only after minimum time as passed: Mutual Peace or Withdrawal. Mutual Peace requires consent by both parties and simply settles the war with no winner. This is an outstanding option when both kingdoms simply lose interest in the war or find it more beneficial to move on and put war behind them. Once the minimum time limit is reached, either Monarch can unilaterally withdraw from war - an admission that victory is not likely to be achieved. Withdrawals can only occur if the declaring kingdom has not committed any attacks within the past two utopian days. Once consensus is reached by the kingdom or a decision is made by the Monarch, the same modalities used for Declaring War are used to settle the War. The Monarch will navigate to the other kingdom’s page and choose one of the aforementioned options. Once any of those scenarios takes effect, the kingdoms will enter a 24-hour ceasefire, where neither party can undertake actions against the other. However, both kingdoms will remain in war relations during this time, continuing the protections from outside interference while the war concludes and each party rebuilds. Temporary War ForumDuring war, a temporary War Forum - identical in form to the Kingdom Forum - will be created in which members of both kingdoms can interact in a single forum. Monarchs and Pages from each kingdom will have the ability to moderate the forums by adding or deleting threads. It is good practice to delete War Forum content just before the end of the mandatory Ceasefire period, as threads may be carried over to the next conflict. Dragon DevelopmentA Monarch may order the development of a Dragon to send to another Kingdom. This Dragon, until destroyed, will cause havoc to every province in the target kingdom, reducing growth and hindering tax collection. To start dragon development, the Monarch will follow the instructions on the Dragons page. Only one dragon at a time may be created and a significant amount of gold coins will be necessary before the creature will set flight. Dragon development may be a strategic move or a choice aimed at balancing an otherwise uneven or unfair conflict. Developing a dragon just for fun may be a very dangerous choice; the receiving kingdom may send one right back. Once the Monarch starts the development of a dragon, provinces are given the option to contribute gold coins to finish the project. A dragon project may be cancelled at any time. Cancelling a dragon will result in the loss of any gold coins already spent. Player InactivityThe Kingdom page lists all provinces currently part of the kingdom. The Monarch has the possibility of seeing which players have been inactive for longer than 48 hours. Such provinces will be marked with a star symbol (*).

![]() Monarchy and TimeA province elected King or Queen of a kingdom will generally devote much more time to the game than any other province. It is essential to elect someone who has the interests of the kingdom at heart and is willing to be diligent. |
